Alexander McCall Smith: The Full Cupboard of Life

Botswana, Africa.

Mma Precious Ramotswe has a new case: Mma Holonga, who started her career as a hairdresser, and ended up as leader of a large franchise of hairdressers, has grown pretty welthy, not to say rich. But still single, she has started looking for men. Picking on men is a favourite task for the leader of the #1 Ladies Detective Agency, and Mma Ramotswe starts digging out information from a shortlist of potential lovers.

Mr. J.L.B Matekoni, Precious’ long lasting fiancee has still not started planning for the wedding, and is still more or less forced to maintain all technical challenges at Mma Potokwani’s orphans’ farm. Suddenly he finds himself having to do a sponsored parashoot jump to fund the farm. A situation most distressing for a person that should avoid stress at any cost to not return to his illness of depression. Another nut to crack for his fiancee. Of course, everything turns out to the best in the end.

To quote myself:
All of the #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency books are precious books. While not ultimate literature, they are great small stories, giving you the Good Feeling. They are telling us that what you are and what you do is infinite more important than what you own, and that life after all, quite often is all right, or even better, and that the World in general, and Botswana in particular, might be a very good place to live.

I’ll warmly recommend this book, and the rest of the series as well.
